Muskoka, Ontario: The Ice Skating Trail Capital of North America

The Muskoka District may not have any junior A hockey teams, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love ice skating. In fact, Muskoka, Ontario, is widely regarded as the ice skating trail capital of North America. Our municipality has four of Ontario’s 12 best ice skating trails in the cities of Huntsville, Bala, Bracebridge, and Port Carling. Each unique path is minutes away from dozens of our luxurious Muskoka cottage rentals. Muskoka District Rentals has a fleet of grand lakefront vacation homes scattered throughout the region. Whether you’re looking for a group rental, wintertime family vacation, or romantic getaway, we have homes of all sizes and styles. One of the most popular winter outdoor activities in Muskoka is ice skating on our immaculate trails. Embark on a midday, sunset, or torchlight skate at one of these three ice skating trails.

Arrowhead Skating Trail - Huntsville
The Arrowhead Skating Trail has been named the 23rd-best Canadian winter experience by Flight Network and the best natural ice skating rink in the world by Travel+Leisure. Arrowhead has been described as a “fairy-tale skate,” making it a perfect activity for couples. The 1.3-kilometre trail is entirely enclosed by lush evergreen forest. The surrounding forest is particularly beautiful after a fresh snowfall or hoarfrost. On select evenings in January, February, and March, you can skate with the help of hundreds of flame-lit torches on “Fire and Ice” nights. Falcon View , our brand new six-bedroom cottage, is only seven kilometres from Arrowhead Provincial Park. Not only does Falcon View have a lavish interior with a stone fireplace, deluxe kitchen, and lake-view master bedroom, but it’s a two-minute drive from downtown Huntsville.

Cranberry Ice Trail - Bala
Johnston’s Cranberry Marsh is arguably the top attraction during the summertime here in Muskoka, Ontario. Once autumn subtly shifts into winter, the team at Muskoka Lakes Farm & Winery begins crafting the 1.2-kilometre Cranberry Ice Trail on their 12-acre property. Skate the loop past lush forest, waterfalls, and cranberry beds before taking a break by the fireplace with a hot cran-apple cider or mulled wine. Johnston’s still provides Bog-to-Bottle tours in the wintertime. Bring along your hockey sticks and a puck because your group can play a friendly game of bog hockey on their cranberry marsh. Johnston’s “ Lights the Night ” every Friday from 6-9 p.m., if you’re interested in skating by torchlight. One of our favorite Muskoka cottage rentals, Birchwood at Bala , overlooks the bay on the edge of town, five kilometres south of the marsh. Birchwood at Bala is walking distance from downtown and offers 2,000 square feet of luxury. Remember to ask the knowledgeable concierge about the area’s best restaurants, attractions, and breweries.

Memorial Park Winter Village - Bracebridge
The Memorial Park Winter Village in Bracebridge resembles The Rink at Rockefeller Center in many ways. This trail wraps around Memorial Park near many of Bracebridge’s landmarks and tall, beautifully-lit trees. The city didn’t begin flooding Memorial Park until 2016, but it became an instant hit for locals and tourists alike. The ice trail is entirely free, just bring along your skates! Memorial Park is also steps from Bracebridge’s best restaurants and downtown shopping. One of our closest Muskoka cottage rentals to the winter village is The Pointe on Brandy Lake , an authentic cottage with modern elegance and old-world charm. The Pointe sleeps 12, making it a popular winter choice for groups and large families.

Hanna Park Ice Skating Trail
We didn’t forget about the Hanna Park Ice Skating Trail in Port Carling. After a successful 2017, Hanna Park’s staff had issues getting the trail flooded with above-average temperatures in 2018. It’s still unclear whether they’ll be back this upcoming winter. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for updates this January.
